Best of 2019: First Looks

In recent years, “first looks” have been getting a lot of air time in the wedding world. From a logistical standpoint, they make great sense- you get to knock out your wedding party photos, family photos, photos of you two, all before the ceremony. With a first look, once the ceremony is over, you get to dive right into your cocktail hour, join your guests for a drink and a snack, and then start your epic reception, all without leaving your guests wondering where you are or having to build gap time into your schedule. A first look is especially perfect for couples whose ceremony and reception will happen in the same venue- no gap time, no leaving the party, no problem. But something I don’t hear a lot about in the First Look conversation is the emotional benefits of seeing each other before the ceremony. In a modern world where many, if not most, couples are living together prior to getting married, it can feel foreign and stressful to spend an entire day or more apart, getting ready and gearing up for a huge event that you’ve spent a year plus planning together, all without seeing or speaking to your person. Starting the festivities (and the photos) by seeing one another, hugging and kissing each other, and breathing a sigh of relief can be a huge stress reliever. It allows couples to be more present during the ceremony, and it gives you a sweet moment alone before the day truly begins. Plus, it makes for some wonderful photographic moments.
